How to Answer, 'So What Do You Do?'

This is a busy time of year for networking and end of year parties and functions. And the inevitable question that often comes up is, “What do you do?”. So how do you answer that?

I try not to start off the conversation that way but if people ask me then I have my PBS ready. In case you’re wondering – that is my personal brand statement or elevator speech or you could say, the ten second commercial about you. 

You don’t want your ten second commercial to sound a bit saleslike and false. It defeats the purpose of having a relaxed conversation and getting to know someone. On the other hand, you don’t want to waft on … sometimes it can be a bit of a challenge. It also takes a bit of practise to keep it brief, clear and memorable.

Try this:

Your name …what you do …. who with …what impact it has on them …in a few seconds.
