Finally, here in Queensland we’re starting to feel a little cooler weather. A change in season for me, and no doubt for you, means it’s time to think about what we’re going to wear to work over the coming months.
Unless you’re “working from anywhere” with a laptop, you’ll need a selection of outfits that not only feel good but look the part as well.
Why not give it some thought now and put a simple plan in place?
My routine is a wardrobe clean-out twice a year, around Easter and again on the October long weekend. I’ll revisit it at other times, but this gives me a solid reset for Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer.
As the seasons shift, it’s the perfect opportunity to refresh your wardrobe and give it a meaningful reboot.
Here are seven ways to help you refine your style, understand your influences, and elevate your personal brand.
1. Create your personal style “look book”
Start by flicking through magazines or scrolling Instagram for inspiration. Collect images of outfits, hairstyles, shoes, and colours that appeal to you. Don’t worry about price, practicality, or where to buy anything just yet. This is about inspiration, not limitation.
You’ll begin to notice patterns emerging. That’s the beginning of your personal brand style.
Think about your style icons. Perhaps it’s the elegance of Cate Blanchett, the polish of Daniel Craig as James Bond, or the relaxed bohemian feel of Rachel Zoe. Maybe you prefer a Rockstar image.
Save these images into a Pinterest board, phone album, or even a simple folder. Over time, you’ll see a common thread. That’s where your signature style begins.
2. Look beyond fashion for style clues
Your style is influenced by more than clothing.
What objects do you love? Fine china, bold artwork, coastal interiors, or minimalist spaces? What does your ideal home or holiday destination look like?
Capture these visuals as well. They offer powerful insight into your aesthetic preferences.
You may notice your style leans towards clean and simple, or perhaps vibrant and expressive. Even if some images feel aspirational, they often reflect a part of you that’s ready to be explored.
3. Understand the colours you’re drawn to
Colour says more about you than you might think.
For example, I’ve always loved gold. It’s often associated with loyalty, responsibility, and a strong sense of organisation. It suggests a preference for structure, stability, and purpose.
That may be one part of your personality. When combined with other colours you love, you’ll start to see a fuller picture of your personal style and energy.
Take a moment to reflect on your favourite colours and what they might say about you.
4. Edit your current wardrobe with intention
Before buying anything new, start with what you already own.
Try everything on. If it doesn’t fit, feels dated, or doesn’t suit your colouring, it’s time to let it go.
Then review what remains. Can you create outfits straight away? Do you notice a theme in colours, cuts, or key pieces?
This is where your wardrobe begins to reflect your personal brand more clearly.

5. Build a smart and focused shopping list
Once you’ve edited your wardrobe, identify what’s missing.
Create a short list of key pieces that will work with what you already have. Then add a wish list of items that could elevate your look from good to great.
Often, it’s not about having more. It’s about having the right pieces that mix and match effortlessly and reflect your style.
You don’t need to look different every day. You simply need to look polished, appropriate, and memorable.
Think about industries like fitness, where activewear has become stylish and intentional. The same principle applies across all professions.
6. Keep your wardrobe evolving
Revisit your wardrobe each season. Replace tired basics and refine what’s no longer working.
You may only need one or two new pieces to refresh your look. A great accessory or a standout outfit can make all the difference.
This applies to everyone. A simple update to shirts, trousers, or a jacket can completely lift a look.
Think of your wardrobe as something that evolves with you. It’s not static. It should grow as your career, lifestyle, and confidence develop.
7. Plan your outfits ahead of time
Planning is the final step that brings everything together.
When you prepare your outfits in advance, you remove daily stress and decision fatigue. You also ensure you’re showing up consistently in a way that reflects your personal brand.
Take a few minutes each week to map out key looks. Consider your schedule, meetings, and events. This small habit creates ease, confidence, and presence.
A refreshed wardrobe isn’t about spending more. It’s about being intentional.
When your style aligns with who you are and how you want to be seen, everything feels easier. You show up with confidence, clarity, and a strong sense of self.
And that’s what personal branding is really about.
