Real estate agents are doing it. Chefs are doing it. Entrepreneurs are doing it.
They are embracing MOJO, becoming their own mobile journalists and creating content to promote their personal brand, business and expertise.
You may know “mojo” as that quality that attracts people to you and makes you feel confident, energetic and successful. Or perhaps you’ve experienced the opposite: that feeling that you’ve lost your mojo when it comes to your image, confidence or performance.
Today, I’m talking about another kind of MOJO.
Being your own multimedia reporter and presenter.
You are the chief editor, producer and presenter of the YOU brand.
Your personal brand is how you present yourself, how you interact with the world and how people remember you. It is your public image, and it matters.
While the term “personal branding” may not have quite the cachet it once did, it is more relevant than ever. The difference is that personal branding has evolved.
Today, it is not simply about a logo, LinkedIn profile or social media account. It is the combination of your personality, visual image, communication style, expertise, relationships and visibility.
I describe this through my 4 x V Formula™: Vital, Visual, Voice and Visible.
Your Vital Core is what makes you different. Your Visual You is how you look and present yourself. Your Voice is the verbal and vocal impression you make. And your Visible You is how and where you communicate your message.
MOJO brings many of these elements together.
Think about what you already do with your smartphone. You write posts. Take photographs. Record videos. Conduct interviews. Go live. Create reels. Share insights. Perhaps you even edit your own content.
You are effectively running a one-person newsroom.
And this way of building your personal brand is only going to continue growing.
The opportunity is to become more confident and intentional about it.
You don't need to become an influencer in the traditional sense. You simply need to become more visible as you.
That means sharing your knowledge, personality and point of view in a way that is genuine, relatable and useful.
It also means remembering that the presenter is part of the message.
If you are appearing on camera, your image, body language, voice and energy all contribute to the impression you make. Looking professional does not mean looking stiff or corporate. Your style should reflect your personality, role and audience.
As an AICI CIC certified image consultant and personal branding specialist, this is an area I have worked in for many years. My career began in modelling before I moved into television presenting, public relations and corporate communications. I now work with executives, entrepreneurs and professionals to strengthen their image, communication and personal brand.
My experience in television taught me an important lesson: you need to connect with your audience, not simply deliver information to them.
The same applies to your MOJO content.
Think about your audience. What do they want to know? What problem can you help them solve? What story, tip or insight can you share?
Keep it interesting. Keep it concise. And don't be afraid to show some personality.
I worked with a client who wanted to become more convincing with his clients. He had plenty of knowledge and experience, but he knew his presentations needed to improve. We worked on helping him become more conversational, interesting and enthusiastic, so he was seen not simply as a salesperson but as a valued expert and partner.
That is the power of personal brand communication.
It is also worth remembering that good presentation skills are learnt. You don't have to be naturally confident in front of a camera. You don't have to have expensive equipment. Start with what you have and practise.
One client recently shared this after a day of presentation coaching:
“I just wanted to say thank you for yesterday, it was exactly what I needed and met my expectations of very practical coaching! I thoroughly enjoyed the day and I'm looking forward to putting the things I've learned about video presentation skills into practice. You have a way to make a person feel comfortable and display much patience!”
Your personal brand is already communicating, whether you are intentionally managing it or not.
So, why not take charge of your MOJO?
You have the power to be your own mobile journalist, presenter and influencer.
The question is: how do you want your brand to be perceived, and what are you going to do today to make it visible?
